Background Profile

Yang Maodong (b.1966), a writer, was a legal advisor in several prominent human rights defense cases. Yang was detained for three months in 2005 in connection with the legal support he provided to villagers in Taishi Village, Guangdong Province, who were demanding the resignation of a village official accused of corruption.

Yang's current detention, since September 14, 2006, stems from the editorial work he did for Shenyang Political Earthquake, a book concerning a political scandal in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Yang has stated that he was subjected to severe physical abuse and around-the-clock interrogation while under arrest.

On November 14, 2007, he was convicted of illegal business activity following a trial marked with procedural irregularities. He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and fined 40,000 yuan and is due for release in September 2011.
